Why Buy Reclaimed Wood?

The Look

One of the biggest appeals of reclaimed wood is how it looks, and also how it feels to be around it. It has a unique charm with a story to tell. In all of its rustic and weathered glory it possesses such natural beauty, free of a modern, manufactured appearance. It ties in perfectly with older properties and also brings warmth, character and a feeling of nostalgia to new spaces. Real wood is wild and unpredictable, just the way we like it.

The Quality

This is a big one. The quality of older wood is significantly better than the newly manufactured timber of today. The reason behind this is that timber of the past was typically sawn from trees which had much more time to grow and mature, which substantially increases the density and durability of the wood. Old growth wood also has great stability, therefore it is much less likely to warp and split. If aged, reclaimed wood is maintained and cared for properly it will last a lifetime.

The Environment

Consuming reusable materials has never been more vital than it is today. If more people choose to use reclaimed wood it helps to preserve our natural resources and slow down the rate of deforestation as the demand for new timber decreases. It is estimated that 6 million tonnes of wood goes to waste in landfills in the UK each year, causing land, water and air pollution. This is something that needs to be addressed and we can all do our part by reusing wood materials.

THE VERSATILITY OF JUNCKERS

At Hargreaves we stock a large quantity of Junckers Beech flooring, typically salvaged from games halls, gymnasiums etc. Beech is traditionally light in colour tone, however through staining you can completely alter the appearance and overall mood of the floor whilst keeping the stunning wood grain on display. Below are examples of the many possibilities you can achieve with your Junckers Beech floor!

RESTORING YOUR FLOOR

If a rustic look is not your style then fear not, as all of our floors can be sanded and re-finished once laid for a refined look. Good as new but still with the stability & strength of aged timber - best of both worlds!

About Us

OUR STORY

Hargreaves Reclaimed Flooring was established in Scotland in July 1990 by the Hargreaves brothers. Initially selling new wood flooring, Hargreaves quickly transitioned to reclaimed after discovering that older timber was superior in quality and character. Since then Hargreaves has flourished as a family business, supplying thousands of square metres of reclaimed wood flooring throughout the UK and beyond.

Originally based in Falkirk, in 2003 the company took the opportunity to move to their current premises at Dougalshill Farm, by Airth in Scotland. In 2009, Mark & Laura Hargreaves joined the team and have helped the business grow to where it is today.

Here at Hargreaves we have always been proud of our environmentally friendly product and continue to supply materials to many clients who promote a Go Green ethos.
